During an economic slump, the Arts always become a victim of costs cutting.  Administrators, faced with reduced budgets chisel away at programs considered non-essential to a well designed curriculum. In the end, Music and Art are destined for the cutting room floor.

Alicia Velez, Co-Founder and President of The Alivel Foundation Inc., a Non-Profit organization committed to the education, preservation and perpetuation of Latin Music, envisions Music and the Arts as paramount to a child’s total education.  As a result the question that comes to mind is, “Where will she go from here?” How will our children overcome the lack of musical education that will fortify their talent, enrich their lives and in the end, provide them with the training that will open their minds to a world descriptive of our history, failures and triumphs, along with tales that can only be told
through song.

The Alivel Foundation Inc. has been built on the premise that every child deserves and is entitled to enrichment of their lives through music. Talent and creativity that must be cultivated so as to provide us with a wellrounded and contributing individual; that government sponsored musical education shouldn’t be the only vehicle to a solid educational experience. Music provides unique and distinct modes of learning. It fosters discipline and commitment. Music education nurtures creativity, self-worth and individuality, while promoting teamwork and cohesiveness. Music is perhaps the most unique representation of civilization’s achievement; and we cannot prepare young people to be a part of a civilized society without teaching them to understand and fully experience society’s greatest accomplishments. As a nation, we have a responsibility to our children and development of their potential. At The Alivel Foundation Inc. we do this through our Grant Giving and Musical Achievement Programs. Through a precise educational experience, participants can follow in the footsteps of classic composers, musicians, producers and song stylists that have taken the original sounds of the Caribbean and turned them into what we know today as Salsa, Son, Merengue, Cumbia and Ranchera music, along with other popular Latin compilations. It’s through contributions from generous individuals such as you, that we can foster and provide our membership with a unique musical experience.

You may ask yourself, how can I make a difference? Are you a gifted musician that enjoys sharing your craft with a child? Maybe you’re already involved in a musical program, but want to give a bit more. We are always in need of volunteers from all industries that can contribute their skills to the multitude of children from diverse backgrounds. Maybe you’re not a musician or music teacher, but you have a few dollars to spare. Our scholarships are a by-product of your contributions and it doesn’t take much to provide a talented youngster with the tools they need to fortify their craft. Sheet music, drum sticks, a mouth piece for their trumpet or clarinet, books, piano lessons, are what your contributions can provide. $5, $10, $20 from a handful of individuals such as you can easily create a $500 grant or scholarship. Maybe you’re feeling very generous and want to contribute more. Regardless of the amount, you can turn a dream into reality.
